Helps normalize bowel function: Psyllium husks are derived from the tiny seeds of the Plantago psyllium plant that grows as a weed in numerous places around the world and is also commercially cultivated. Rich in fibre, psyllium has been prescribed for constipation and other digestive ailments for more than 500 years. When mixed with water, these husks form a gel-like mixture that absorbs excess water from the intestines resulting in larger, softer stools. Because these stools are easier to pass, constipation is relieved and hemorrhoid pain is reduced. Psyllium has also been found to have a soothing effect on irritable bowel syndrome and diverticular disease. Diarrhea is also relieved due to psyllium’s ability to absorb large amounts of excess water from loose stools.
Lowers cholesterol: In the 1980s, scientists discovered that psyllium lowers blood cholesterol, particularly the “bad” LDL cholesterol that can adhere to artery walls and lead to heart disease.
Aids in weight loss: When psyllium absorbs water, it fills the stomach, resulting in a feeling of satiation. In addition, it delays the emptying of food from the stomach, causing one to feel full longer. Because, psyllium helps stabilize blood sugar levels, food cravings may be reduced.
